The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic Mubi chapter, has accused the immediate past rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Sadiq Yahya of completely bastardizing the institution in his eight year stint as the helmsman of the school.

The irate unionists, who converged at the Yola campus of the institution accused the former rector of administering the institution with blithe regard for constitutionality accusing him of administering the institution as if it is his personal fiefdom.

They accused Yahya of power drunkenness, executive rascality, tyranny and unprecedented sleaze noting that the man has no slightest democratic credentials as he abhors any form of criticism with passion and crush anyone who disagrees with him with maximum force.

They called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the ex-rector over the unprecedented sleaze he perpetrated while “his locus administration lasted.”

The members also accused the out-going rector of witch hunting and disengaging staff without recourse to the due process of law.

Leader of the protesters and chairman of ASUP, Mubi Polytechnic chapter, Hussaini James, who spoke on behalf of the members said the outgoing rector has completely ruined the polytechnic adding that because of the reign of tyranny he wrought on the institution, his fear was the beginning of wisdom.

” For over three months now, Dr. Yahya did not show up in the school since his tenure has expired but only for him to attempt to handover affairs of the school to the Deputy Rector in his house in Song yesterday which the deputy refused and he shifted it to this morning.

” Because he got wind of us (ASUP) members are aware he want to handover today, he hurriedly handed over to the Deputy Rector at about 10pm in Yola campus of the school without the Registrar of the school and other management staff of the institution.

“The outgoing Rector made himself a tyrant whose words must be obeyed be it right or wrong,” he said.

The association also accused the out-going rector of complete disregard for the school’s academic advisory board and not making consultations on serious academic and welfare matters.

“We are calling on the Federal government to investigate the activities of Dr Sadiq Yahya in the last 8 years he held sway as the Rector, for financial recklessness.

” We have on record that Dr Yahya bought a refurbished jeep for N3.5m but claim it was purchased at N29m.

“Meanwhile he had refused to pay our 64 months arreas of CONTIS 15 approved for academic staff.

“Please we are pleading with Federal government to ask him where is our 64 months arreas of CONTIS 15 ”.

The unionists similarly accused Yahya of sacking 100 staff staff of the polytechnic illegally just as as they accused him of disregarding president Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to implement polytechnic act 2019.

James said as of the time of the protest, nobody can give account and the whereabout of the remittance of Salary of Advance (SA) of the institution.

He noted that in the lsst eight years, the rector could not organize convocation yet certificate are issued to graduants adding that Yahya has turned issues of promotion as exclusive preserve of the rector which are enjoyed only by loyal staff as such even junior staff are being made directors under his leadership.

“Academics is not for one person the union believe in seniority and equity.”

The union urged federal government to investigate the matter with a view to strengthening academic excellence of the institution.

But responding to the barrage of accusations trailing the leadership style of the immediate past rector, Barr M A Sulaiman acting dean, school of business management technology said the rector has done well and need to be applauded.

” He has not committed any wrong doing because I don’t know one thing he has done wrongly.

” In the polytechnic we have three different unions the rector has related well with all of them,” he said.

When he was asked to comment on the failure of the Yahya to do a handover as demanded by law, Sulaiman said the former rector has done the handing over silently.

” It is not a must that you must perform handover ceremony with pomp and pageantry. Being a reserved person, he ensured that there was no celebration when he came on board and he also ensured that he left silently.

” Only three persons were around when he took over the institution and he silently conducted the handover so the claim that he sneaked away was a hoax.

” He called the registrar so that a proper handover could be done but the registrar refused to pick his call. He called the bursar and the bursar came on Tuesday and they conducted the handover on Wednesday. The handover was done around 4:00pm contrary to insinuations,” he said.

Sulaiman also refuted claims that the man has been sacking staff who disagree with him unilaterally saying that; “He did not have the powers to sack workers.

“The fact is that a worker can only be sacked after a committee is constituted and management must agree and a proposal sent to the council. If council agrees then the person can be sacked.

“Saying that one man can sack a staff shows that those making the statement are ignorant of public service rules.”

On the allegation of the rector’s refusal to appoint a deputy rector, Sulaiman said; “before the rector can appoint the person he so wish but with the new polytechnic act, he lost that privilege.

” There are a lot of procedures including election before a deputy rector can emerge. There are four to five stages not like before where you just sent a proposal.”

He also dispels the allegation that the rector has refused to implement CONTISS 15 for 64 months saying there is no way government can earmark such monies and one person will sit on top of it.

” If govt earmarks money for the payment of workers entitlement, nobody can refuse to make such payment.

“In fact when the circular came, the rector paid for nine months from the IGR of the school but when the government refused to make further reimbursement he stopped payment after nine months. Up till now government has not given him money for that purpose,” he said.

While commenting on the accusation that the former rector did not record any tangible feat during his eight year tenure, Silaiman said; ” the rector met only 8 PhD holders but now there are 34 PhD holders.

“We have 35 accredited departments when he came on board now we have 45 accredited departments.

“He came at the peak of Boko Haram insurgency but he increased the carrying capacity tremendously and he has stabilized the institution despite the fact that in the whole of Nigeria it is the only polytechnic affected by insurgency.

” The institution was sacked for months and facilities destroyed. We have to refurbish all the facilities yet the polytechnic is moving at par with polytechnics that were not affected by insurgency.

” He has equally built laboratories, and many other projects. His major offence is that he did not disbursed the resources of the institution for the sake of political correctness that is why some aggrieved persons who are not happy with his style felt he must be crushed,” he said.
