Arewa Traders Association (ATAN) has elected Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad a.k.a Ibrahim 86 as its new chairman.
The election of Ibrahim 86 as the new chairman followed the death of the immediate past chairman of the association, Alhaji Ayuba Muhammad about two months ago.
Ibrahim 86 from Adamawa State, was elected by members of the association and board of trustees from the 19 states in the North including Abuja, while Alhaji Kabiru Hali from Sokoto, emerges vice chairman of the association.
Chairman of board of trustees of the association and executive chairman, Nigerian Traders Association, Dr Bature Abdul’aziz, announced the election of Ibrahim 86 shortly after their meeting at the Onyx Hotel in Abuja, on Saturday.
He said “we have elected Alhaji Ibrahim 86 as our new chairman. We elected him based on his proven track record and immense contribution to the association spanning many decades. He is a square peg in a square hole.
“For now we have elected the chairman and his vice, and will announce other positions including the secretary of the organization in due course,” he said.
While congratulating Ibrahim 86 and his vice chairman, Dr. Bature, expressed optimism that the election of Ibrahim 86 will usher in unity, prosperity and purposeful leadership adding that the emergence of 86 is a good omen for the union.
“We are looking for a man who is an embodiment of wisdom, diligence and commitment. The association and the board of trustees have done their best in electing Ibrahim 86 because of his sterling leadership qualities that have earned him the trust of all the state chapters of the association,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim 86 while accepting the challenge to lead the association, commended the foresight of the members, saying they will not regret voting him.
He added “we will be fair to all manner of people and will carry all along irrespective of any affiliation.”
He urged the members to give him the necessary cooperation to move the association to the next level of development.
He also promised to defend the traders especially from harassment while on highways noting that he will work with relevant stakeholders to ensure protection of traders under him.
He also promised to establish renewed unity, secure loans for traders and protect the traders from paying unnecessary tolls.
Following his victorious outing, members of the Adamawa state chapter of the association from the 21 local governments of the state organised a rally as a mark of honour and solidarity to the new chairman saying that his election will bring new tidings to the association.
