Police have today raided Adamawa State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and molested the state chairman of the council, Donald Dedan and arrested many others.

Trouble started when the policemen led by the DPO, Jimeta division in three Hilux vans, stormed the press center in a commando style and immediately started assaulting those on sight.

Reports indicated that upon their arrival, the police went gaga and started physically assaulting those on sight and forcefully herded several others into the waiting Hilux vans, noting that many staff of the center were arrested by the marauding policemen.

An eyewitness account stated that “The police used sticks and butt of their guns to beat those arrested before there were herded like animals into the vehicles.

” If this brutality is meted on the journalists then what will happen to the hapless citizens is better imagined.”

According to the eyewitness, the police also arrested a Lawyer, a bank manager, a controller of federal inland revenue and a medical doctor playing long tennis at the premises of the Press Center.

Speaking on the sad development, the state council chairman, Comrade Donald Dedan said those arrested have been taken to the state headquarters of the police in Yola.

Dedan disclosed that he was at the press center to ensure that no clubbing or any other activity is taking place at the center in deference to the lockdown order by the state government aimed at taming the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I saw someone calling on the police through phone at the gate of NUJ Press Center, then within a short period of time, I saw three Hilux vans filled with Police and immediately started molesting anyone on sight.

” I was not spared from the brutality as a police sergeant molested me and even attempted to slap me,” he said.

Dedan added that, the State commissioner of Police, Mr. Audu Madaki, directed for immediate release of the people arrested.

Comrade Dedan said, the unsavory and barbaric action of the police in brutalising journalists or carrying out unprovoked attack on its premise will not go unchecked.

“We would determine the next line of action after an emergency meeting by the State Executive Council on Friday.

” This is the second time within this week that Police came to NUJ Press Center, Adamawa State to molest our people,” he added.
