Kwara State Government has announced the closure of all forests in the state and banned every activity in the forests except farming, in the next one month.
The state commissioner for environment, Architect Aliyu Saifudeen announced the closure while addressing newsmen in Ilorin, the state capital.
According to Arc Salifudeen indiscriminate activities in the forest are fast disrupting the state’s ecosystem and exposing it to severe effects of climate change.
He explained that the closure would enable the ministry take account of what is left of the natural endowment for further action and the inventory of what goes on therein, warning that any one who carry out any activity other than farming within the period will be prosecuted.
Arc Saifudeen also explained that the government will embark on massive tree planting to be flagged off by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and minister of environment Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar later in the year.
Saifudeen, who announced ongoing sensitisation of the populace on the need to sanitise their state, said the government would also embark on enforcement of the law banning obstruction of traffic flow through indiscriminate trading on roadsides and median and street begging.
He lamented that such practices constitute serious threats to millions of people.
