Adamawa State Executive Council has on Wednesday approved N550 million for the procurement of 5,000 metric tones of NPK fertilizer for 2020 farming season in the state.
The council has equally approved over N106 million for the purchase of 52,000 litres of assorted agrochemicals and hybrid seeds for disbursement to farmers.
The commissioner of information and strategy, Umar Garba Pella disclosed this while briefing newsmen shortly after the council meeting, presided by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in the council chamber, Government House, Yola.
He said the government will sell it to farmers at a subsidized rate of N5,500 per bag of 50 kg which is less than what is obtainable in markets.
He revealed that out of the over N106 million naira, N96 million will be used for purchase of 52,000 assorted agrochemicals, while the rest will go for the purchase of hybrid seeds to boost food security,
The commissioner said security situation has delayed the process, due to the ban on NPK fertilizer in the North eastern states by the federal government based on the insinuation that the product is used for making explosive devices.
He said the state government has requested the federal government through the office of the National Security Adviser to lift the ban on NPK fertilizer in the north east, otherwise government has no option than to look for any satisfied product for purchase.
Contributing, the commissioner of Agriculture, Dishi Khobe who also shed more light on the supply of fertilizer in the state, said government is not late as very soon the product will be procured for sell to actual farmers at subsidized rate.
On his part, the State Head of Civil Service, Doctor Edgar Amos Sunday said the council had deliberated on the possibility of commencing Pension Contributory Scheme in the state because the current pension scheme is bedevilled with a lot of challenges.
